Does Alkaline Water Really Help with Hydration?

3 min read

The jury is still out on whether alkaline water has legitimate health benefits, but some research suggests that alkaline water may actually improve hydration.

Here’s what the early studies have to say about alkaline water and hydration:

ESSENTIAL TAKEAWAYS

Alkaline water has a pH level of 7.5 to 9.

Maintaining a proper acid-base balance is important for overall health.

Some athletes claim that drinking alkaline water helps improve physical performance and recovery times, although more research is needed.

Most bottled waters lacks healthy minerals, like magnesium and calcium, because they're removed during the production process.

High-end reverse osmosis (RO) filters produce perfectly alkaline water by balancing pH and remineralizing with healthy electrolytes.

What Is Alkaline Water, Exactly?

Alkaline, or basic, is the opposite of acidic.

Alkaline water is water that’s slightly basic on the pH scale.

The pH scale is used to measure the acid-base balance of a solution. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 0 being the most acidic, 14 being the most basic and 7 being exactly neutral.

Alkaline water usually falls between pH 7.5 and 9.

While some water is naturally alkaline due to mineral content, most bottled alkaline water is created through electrolysis, an electrical process that separates and removes acidic ions.

PRO TIP: naturally mineralized water is healthier for you!

DID YOU KNOW?

According to a 2012 study, drinking alkaline water may benefit patients with reflux disease. That's because alkaline water with a pH of 8.8 instantly deactivates pepsin: the main cause of reflux disease.

Acid-Base Balance and Your Health

According to advocates, it can help the body maintain a healthy acid-base balance.

A pH of 7.35 to 7.45 seems to be the Goldilocks zone.

The blood requires the perfect balance of acidic and basic compounds in order to function properly.

The kidneys and lungs are especially sensitive to pH and even slight variations can cause serious side effects.

Luckily the body is always hard at work balancing the blood’s pH through three key functions:

  1. The blood’s own built-in buffering systems
  2. Filtering the blood with the kidneys
  3. Respiration (breathing)

In the following study, researchers found that mineralised water may improve hydration...

Drinking Alkaline Water May Improve Hydration Following Exercise

The properties of alkaline mineral water may have positive effects on the acid-base balance and hydration in athletes.

Early studies show that drinking mineralized alkaline water can improve physical performance and recovery following exercise.

In a recent study published in the journal Biology of Sport, 36 male athletes hydrated with either:

  1. Highly-mineralized water
  2. Low-mineralized water
  3. Tap water

Researchers then tracked hydration and pH levels before and after intense exercise.

They found that athletes who drank the low-mineralized (slightly alkaline) water were the most hydrated.

Researchers concluded that:

“Drinking alkaline water in amounts of 4.0 l per day shows a positive effect on hydration status after anaerobic exercise with a significant decrease of specific urine gravity.”

In other words, drinking it improves hydration in active, healthy adults.

Hydration is an important part of a healthy life because if you lose too many fluids it can throw the body’s pH out of whack.

However, when you replace lost fluids and electrolytes, you can prevent injuries, recover faster and perform at a higher level.

The severity of COVID-19 and similar illnesses are directly linked with imbalances of electrolytes like sodium, potassium and calcium.

Alkaline Supplements Can Have a Significant Impact on the Body’s Acid-Base Balance

Several studies have found that alkaline minerals, a.k.a. electrolytes, can have a significant impact on the body’s acid-base balance, and some researchers believe that drinking alkaline water may have similar benefits:

“It is possible that the regular consumption of alkaline water could have an effect similar to nutritional supplements on markers of acid-base balance, yet this has not been evaluated in a controlled manner.”

Some of the most important minerals for hydration are:

  • Magnesium
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Sodium

These minerals are common in many sources of alkaline water, including some in-home water treatment systems...

The Best Source of Pure, Toxin-free Alkaline Water

Ready to give alkaline water a try?

When you start digging around and doing your own research, you find that quality alkaline water can be hard to come by.

Most bottled alkaline water is produced through electrolysis and lacks the natural mineral content that is so important for healthy hydration.

Worst of all, bottled water usually contains toxic microplastics that leach into the water from plastic containers.

Last but not least, tap water across the country contains dangerous toxins like nuclear byproducts, lead, arsenic and chemical disinfectants like chlorine.

Fortunately the water filter revolution is underway and there are plenty of affordable in-home water systems to choose from...

Cloud Water Filters use a series of charcoal filters, ion exchange resins and reverse osmosis membranes to remove 99.9 percent of harmful contaminants.

Then in the final remineralization stage they add healthy minerals, like magnesium and calcium, to alkalize the water and balance pH.

Cloud Filters even contain built-in software that syncs to your phone and monitors your water quality 24/7.
